Common Issues

The extension shows "Not on a Google Docs page"

Make sure the active tab is a Google Docs URL that begins with docs.google.com/document/. The extension will not activate on Drive, Sheets, or other Google product pages.

Authentication fails / Sign in loop

Try revoking extension access in your Google Account and re-authenticating. Go to myaccount.google.com → Security → Third-party access, find Docs Comment Exporter, and remove it. Then re-open the extension and sign in again.

Comments are not loading

Check that you have the Google Drive API enabled and your OAuth client is configured correctly (for self-built versions). If you installed from the Chrome Web Store, ensure you are signed in and that the extension has been granted Drive access when prompted.

The exported file is empty

Make sure the document has comments and that you have at least Commenter access. Documents with no comment threads will produce an empty export. Suggestion-mode comments are not supported — see Known Limitations below.

Getting Started

Follow these steps to export your first comment thread:

  1. Install Docs Comment Exporter from the Chrome Web Store
  2. Open any Google Doc that contains comment threads
  3. Click the Docs Comment Exporter icon in the Chrome toolbar
  4. Click Load Comments and sign in with your Google account if prompted
  5. Choose your preferred export format: Markdown, CSV, or JSON
  6. Click Copy to Clipboard or Download File to save your export
